The Lowitja Institute have produced a video, What is Knowledge Exchange, which introduces the concept of Ganma as a metaphor for Indigenous understanding of knowledge exchange. Ganma is the name of a lagoon where two streams of water, one from the land and one from the sea, meet and mix. Water is a symbol of knowledge in the Yolngu philosophy and the concept of ganma holds that the forces of the two streams combine and in coming together form foam at the surface. This foam represents a deeper understanding and truth. The two streams can be thought of as Western knowledge and Yolngu knowledge. The Lowitja Institute defines knowledge exchange as: a two-way process between researchers and the users of research, in which research is used to change what is done (policy and planning) or how things are done (practice and systems).
